“Must open up your eyes” Words of Ryoma
Source: 19th August, 3rd year of Bunkyu era, in a letter addressed to Motarou Kawarazuka I have realized now that one must open up your eyes and make use of the opportunity you were given. In 1863 (3rd year of Bunkyu), Ryoma visited Kyoto, Osaka and Edo, following his visit to Fukui in May. He wrote reply to the letter sent by his brother Gonpei to Ryoma in Osaka. If one studies only in Tosa country, then your theory would only be effective within the one small country. In the letter, Ryoma expresses his determination to learn from the bigger world in order to widen his knowledge and to become more educated, improving on and not wasting the opportunity he was given. Motarou Kawarazuka is the younger brother of Gonpei’s wife, Chino, and he played an active role in Hanpeita Takeichi’s Tosakinnou-tou that he joined in the first year of Bunkyu era. Sisyu “I depicted the light of new era shining on these words.”
