Words of Ryoma Source:Waka draft 2 Yonohitowa wareonanitomo yuwabaie waganasukotowa warenomizoshiru In November 1835 (6th year of Tempou era), Ryoma was born at Kouchi castle as the second son of a country samurai, Hachihei Sakamoto. He started training in swordsmanship at the age of fourteen. Aged nineteen, he left for Edo for swords training, and entered the dojo of Sadakichi Chiba, who was specialized in Hokushin ittouryu. His swords skills improved there. It is thought that he composed this waka in his teenage years. Sisyu “I depicted the will of young Ryoma who was determined never to give up living his life his way, despite his insecurity due to lack of experience in teenage years and the lack of support by others.
