“Dream”
I think about this sometimes. The fact that I’m a calligrapher now and that I was able to change job is all because of the strong will of many young spirits, who were here not so long ago in history at the end of Edo era, when things were changing so rapidly. At the end of Edo era, the class system exisited, and you could not choose your job so freely. It was the time when you didn’t have the freedom of choice, as your job, house and the clothes you wear were determined by birth, and people’s lives were treated unequally. That was only 150 years ago. Our ‘modern era’ is what brave young people like Ryoma dreamt of and worked hard and risked their lives for, thinking to make the country a better place for the next generation. We have inherited so much from them. We have the freedom to choose and change jobs, live in any cities we like, and to live for our dreams. I think it’s our duty to accept the gift from Ryoma and others with appreciation, to live our lives to the full extent, and to do the best we can for the next generation of people.
